Welcome to Sedjanka's homepage
Sedjanka - which means ‘musical fellowship’ in Bulgarian - is a female choir based in Aarhus, Denmark, that specialises in modern arrangements of Bulgarian folk songs.
The choir is lead by the Bulgarian born conductor, Michael Deltchev, who is a professional and internationally acclaimed conductor. Sedjanka was founded in 1994 and has since then expanded the Danish people's knowledge of the Bulgarian music tradition with a joy and soulfullness that joins two cultures in a musical fellowship.
On this website you can find out more about Sejdanka's history, concerts, Bulgarian folk music, etc. You can also listen to and order Sedjanka's Cds. Enjoy!
Sedjanka
The choir has similar repertoire to the Bulgarian choir Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares. Since Le Mystère visited Aarhus in 1993, it has been an inspiration to Sedjanka, and in 2004 Sedjanka's members had the great pleasure of meeting Le Mystère in a 'sedjanka' of their own.
The Bulgarian music has its own mood and alternates between very rhythmical, sharp and joyous songs, and calmer songs with broad planes of sound and beautiful harmonies. The powerful and metallic a cappella sound is very characteristic of the Bulgarian music tradition, and the odd times of the music and the unusual but powerful dissonances have fascinated many an audience over the years since the founding of Sedjanka in 1994. Not least the members of the choir who regularly visit Bulgaria to be inspired and trained by professional Bulgarian soloists and music teachers. During these visits to Bulgaria, Sedjanka has also had the pleasure of performing for the Bulgarians both on TV and in concert.
Apart from workshops in Bulgaria, Sedjanka also frequently invites the music teachers to Denmark in order to maintain the unique musical sound and the proper pronunciation of the Bulgarian words.
Since the beginning Sedjanka has given concerts on a regular basis many places in Denmark. The dates of the coming concerts can be seen in the annotated concert calendar as well as past concerts.
Sedjanka has recorded two CD's over the years. Sedjanka-Denmark was recorded in Lystrup Church in 1998-2000 with the soprano, Tzvetanka Varimezzova, as a special guest soloist. The second CD, Bulgarian Landscapes, was recorded in Ravnsbjerg Church in 2004 as a joint release between Sedjanka and Orchestra Pipero.
